Broadwood Stadium: In Support of Cumbernauld and District Women’s Aid

Our fifth charity match took place under the lights at Broadwood Stadium, the former home of Clyde FC and the current ground of Rangers Women. It was a special night for the club. We debuted our brand new kits, proudly sponsored by Celsius Plumbing and Heating, and our new badge lit up the stadium scoreboard. A brilliant moment for everyone involved.

This match also carried deep meaning. It was played in honour of Graham Burns, the father of our own Kris Burns, who sadly passed away just three days earlier. The full squad wore black armbands and came together for a minute’s silence before kick off to show support for Kris and his family.

The match started at a frantic pace. The Blues struck early, with Johnny Cairns reacting quickest to finish a rebound for 1-0. Ryan Park doubled the lead soon after, slotting home after good work from Cairns on the break. The Yellows then found their rhythm and pulled one back. A sharp move down the right ended with Darren Cain flicking the ball on for Dirk Otway, who finished well at the back post.

The Blues had a chance to restore their cushion from the spot, but Boggie’s penalty flew over. Moments later Cain punished a loose pass to level things at 2-2. Just before half time the Yellows struck again. Cain threaded a lovely ball through to Andy Hamilton, who rolled it into the far corner to give the Yellows a 3-2 lead at the break.

The second half was tight until Johnny Watt picked out Cain with a brilliant through ball. Cain beat three defenders and finished from a tight angle to make it 4-2. Yellow extended their lead when Mark McLeod whipped in a dangerous cross that forced an own goal. The final goal of the night was a beauty. McLeod hit a powerful strike from distance that curled past the keeper after tidy link up play from Graham Miller. It capped a strong second half and a 6-2 win for the Yellows.

As always, the score was only part of the story. This game brought the group together for a cause that mattered, and with £500 raised for Cumbernauld and District Women’s Aid, the night will have a real impact beyond the pitch.
